Francis Quarles 1592-1644

Francis Quarles was born in Essex, the son of a surveyor-general of victualling for the Navy. He was educated at Christ's College, Cambridge and the studied law at Lincoln's Inn. He married and had nine children.

He accompanied Princess Elizabeth, the daughter of James I, when she travelled to Germany for her marriage to the Elector Palatine. He wrote pamphlets in defence of Charles I which led to the sequestration of his property.

One of the metaphysical poets, he is chiefly remembered for his Emblems, published in 1635, and for Enchiridion, a book of aphorisms.
