Sir Robert Ayton (1570-1638)Robert Ayton was educated at St. Andrews University in Scotland. He served as secretary to the wife of James I, Anne of Denmark, and later to the wife of Charles I, Henrietta Maria. An accomplished linguist, Ayton was one of the first Scots to write in standard English as opposed to the Scottish vernacular and much of his poetry is on the subject of love. His best known poem is, however, Should Old Acquaintance Be Forgot, a forerunner of Robert Burns' later version.
